Zero Growth Does Not Bode Well
Letters to the Editor | 1 day 8 hours ago | Comments 3
To The Editor: Tempers flared at a recent Wildwood Commission meeting because Commissioner Gary DeMarzo wrote ill-advised letters to the media and governmental entities concerning a trivial issue. He wasted everyone’s time while real issues continue to be evaded, especially the financial condition of the community and the state. As a 72-year-old, life-long resident of the South Jersey Shore, I’m confident the real issue that demands to be immediately discussed and rectified is continuing tax increases. Look at the facts. The Wildwoods are losing people. According to the 2007 report from the US Census Bureau, the Wildwoods have lost 173 year-round residents. The only gain was in Wildwood Crest. Zero growth does not bode well for the taxpayer’s future. Why? There will be less tax revenue distribution to our communities from the federal, state and county government therefore, the individual’s tax share will continue to increase to cover the burden. In Atlantic City on Nov. 20, Gov. Corzine asked local leaders, at their annual municipal convention, to “help New Jersey cope with a $1.2 billion shortfall in the current state budget and an even larger projected gap next year.” The governor predicted massive property tax increases if some plan is not formulated. And as sure as the sun rises in the east, we will be obligated to pay those increased taxes. What can we do? The salaries, disability insurance, health insurance, worker’s compensation insurance, unemployment insurance, administrative, retirement, and education costs to operate four Wildwood municipalities will continue to increase, unless our leadership does something positive. These fiscal truths facing our state and our communities are unassailable. The real issue then is financial stability. And one possible relief in our region is to consolidate our four Wildwood communities. Not an easy task. Okay Wildwood, why not initiate action by choosing a qualified fiduciary to unilaterally analyze the budgets of the four Wildwoods. From that analysis, determine whether or not it makes sense to consolidate. Then, if it does, get the other communities involved and put it to the voters. Finally Mr. DeMarzo, here’s your opportunity to use your voice and vote on a meaningful issue to move forward on the question of consolidation. Your political party and those individuals who voted for you will appreciate a positive gesture for once. CHARLES BROCKMAN North Wildwood

'Slow Food' Promotes Good Food
Letters to the Editor | 1 day 8 hours ago | Comments 0
To the Editor: Jack Fichter's excellent article on "Local Produce Helps Slow Food Win Fans" was accurate in every aspect but one: we are the South Jersey Slow Food Convivium. We join 170 other Slow Food chapters in Philadelphia and New York, for example, but also in Central Jersey and North Jersey. With the founding of our chapter, the entire "Garden State" will be covered. Not only does the Slow Food movement promote food that is "good, clean, and fair,” it also supports school cafeterias in providing healthy foods for healthy kids and restaurants that serve fresh, local food. We believe that healthy food is a birthright for us all. And, by the way, since Fichter's article appeared in the Nov. 12 edition, we've had numerous inquiries and several people who have already joined. People can find out more about this organization at www.slowfoodUSA.org or by contacting us locally at slowfood@cape-may.net or 609-898-8714. MARGUERITE CHANDLER Cape May Point

South Jersey Historically Gets Nothing
Letters to the Editor | 1 day 8 hours ago | Comments 2
To The Editor: Wildwood is rumored to be getting one of the two betting parlors allotted to the three-county South Jersey sector, which includes Atlantic County, Cumberland County and Cape May County. Conjecture over the location being Wildwood or Middle abounds. The only way Wildwood will get this economy booster is to fight for it. Wildwood has been mentioned as a site for the facility going back more than 10 years. Former Sen. James Cafiero, who was instrumental in getting the now “watershed” facility, the Wildwoods Convention Hall, a economic engine, also used his influence and leverage to have Wildwood be among the top listed communities for the first of the parlors. Maybe the former longtime senator who won every election by overwhelming margins, and is considered one of the most respected New Jersey state senators ever, could be approached to act as our advocate in Trenton. His legal and political credentials make him a natural for the effort; and since he no longer is an office holder can assume the position as an advocate, hired by the community. While others may believe Wildwood is “in the running,” South Jersey historically gets nothing unless they battle for it. It is naïve to think that a betting parlor will be “gifted” to a Cape May County town by the North Jersey weighted legislature. Consider that Atlantic County already has its gaming engine – the casinos and the racetrack. The Wildwoods are hurting financially and the summer season alone hardly sustains the failing economic situation even when there was a building boom. The Wildwoods need some annual revenue producers right on the island. Middle Township has two major shopping districts. The other communities are self sustaining financially by recent and historic statistics. The case can be made for the Wildwoods but it won’t be easy. Better get someone to spearhead the effort – like Jimmy Cafiero. ANTHONY DISIMONE Wildwood

Great idea as an anchor location on Pacific Avenue. Since you already have the prostituation, drugs, and cheesy bars, it seems like a perfect location. Throw in the corrupt politicans and you could rename it the All Vice Town. The family resort where every member could sneak away from the beach and boardwalk and engage in whatever vice they choose.

Fashionable To Be Stupid
Letters to the Editor | 1 day 8 hours ago | Comments 0
To The Editor: Who says the current government's policies do not have a trickle down economic effect? I used to say there was no trickling going on. However, since the almost unanimous bailout, I have changed what's left of my mind. I speak here of incredible mathematic stupidity that has apparently trickled down for some time. It has become quite obvious that, during the last days of “W’s” reign, his ignorance has rubbed off on the general populace. It has become pretty fashionable to be stupid; people cannot do basic mathematic operations such as adding and subtracting. For example, if someone earns $50,000 per year and buys a house for $350,000, how can they afford their mortgage payment? How much would that payment be? Wait; don't get out your calculator. The answer is very simple: the payment would be too much. But, don't worry your pretty empty little head about it. The mortgage company said it's OK, you can afford it. I say, what an embarrassing bunch of fools. JUDY KULP North Cape May

Writer Inspired by Hall's Perils of Skunk Column
Letters to the Editor | 1 day 8 hours ago | Comments 0
To The Editor: Thanks for the educational, entertaining and inspirational editorials by your publisher, Art Hall. Obviously, Hall is a devout, religious, conservative fellow. Here's what I've learned from him: I've learned he lost his job at "The Leader." I suspect someone may have told him it was because he stunk. Because a skunk had sprayed in the crawl space under his house, he blamed the job loss on the skunk. Unfortunately, he's made it sound as though his entire family lived in the crawl space under the house and were there to receive the spray. I've learned he seems to have become quite paranoid about skunks. He's concerned skunks will be "allowed to overrun us." Apparently, he's taken to heart Christ's message that "the meek shall inherit the earth." Hopefully, Hall doesn't have nightmares about George Orwell's "Animal Farm." I've learned 89 people from Avalon have called to complain about skunk sightings. Of course, it's possible they've complained about a different kind of skunk. I've read (in the Herald) someone in Avalon is concerned about skunks and cats mating because they accept each other. The person has speculated about the combo becoming a "skat." For your information, I already know some men/boys on 7-Mile Island who have become (people and skunks) stinky "punks." I also know a few men with dogs, who've become (humans and dogs) smelly "hogs." However, Hall has inspired me: In spite of the terrible economy, if I think the stores where I Christmas shop will be crowded with long lines, well, I'll just chew lots of raw garlic a couple of hours before I leave my house. That should do the trick. Thank you, Art Hall for your inspiration. JULIAETTA LAMBERT Stone Harbor

Mayor Made Poor Attempt to Degrade Commissioner
Letters to the Editor | 1 day 9 hours ago | Comments 5
To The Editor: I believe that you missed the point with your opinion about what the mayor did at the last meeting to Commissioner Scott Golden. Yes, you are correct about it being a matter of public record, but there is a matter of decorum that should have been exercised by Mayor Fredricks. If he had an issue with Golden, what is wrong with discussing it man to man before or after the meeting? If he had, he would have found out that Golden’s taxes were indeed paid. This was a poor attempt to degrade a commissioner on his staff. Golden is a courteous person and a pleasure to have as a neighbor. I believe, the mayor is trying to force him to resign and run his government here as “my way or the highway.” Is it not the idea of a group of commissioners to have input from all three? West Wildwood has become a one-person commission with McNamara saying yes to all that the mayor proposes, right or wrong. JOSEPH SMITH West Wildwood

to mr smith,I beleive you must have been asleep when scott was explaining how the budget and surplus worked ! scott himself explained that 10 percent of realestate taxes were left uncollected , leaving the 90 percent of us who pay ontime to make up the ballance . giving the statement he made ,and the fact that his taxes were not paid in full ,he was not a resident in good standing .he shouldnt have even been allowed to run for commisioner ! stop thinking one sided and open your eyes. you dont have to look to hard to see what was going on !it has nothing to do with chuck or gerry, its rite there in front of your eyes ! WERE YOU PROMISED A NEW BULKHEAD OR SOMETHINGELSE AS A FAVOR ? we asked for nothing,no favors, no favoratism ,no nothing ,just our town back . stop trying to derail the commision and let them all do there job . if you dont like the job there doing then move or vote in four years ! dont come to the meeting handing out "FLASH CARDS " let the people ask there own questions . we all seen firsthand what happens when the coach gets thrown out . even his own wife sounded like a real jackass ! the meeting went smooth when the coach was gone ,that should tell you something. either that or they have something on you as well . Writer Has Issues with Davenport’s Letter
Letters to the Editor | 1 week 1 day ago | Comments 16
To The Editor: In response to Commissioner William Davenport’s letter in the Nov. 5 Herald: Many taxpayers and citizens have faithfully attended and expressed their suggestions and opinions at commissioner meetings only to be maligned or ignored. Davenport and Mayor Ernie Troiano have repeatedly ignored the opinions and suggestions of the residents and have refused to fund videotaped commissioner’s meetings to afford the people a transparent government. Commissioner Gary DeMarzo, at his own expense, has supplied this much-needed service. What concerns me the most is the tone of Davenport’s letter. He seems to attack anyone who dares use their rights to the Open Public Records Act (OPRA) to acquire information. He talks about a chain of command when referring to Remington Vernick but doesn’t tell us what that chain of command is, or explain what he specifically has trouble with. He talks about DeMarzo voting “no” to many things he’s allowed to vote on. Isn’t this democracy? Is Davenport upset that DeMarzo is the only voice of the people in city hall, and after listening to the taxpayers, votes his conscience. Is he upset that DeMarzo comments on articles in the newspaper stating that he was not included in any of the negotiations of the Back Bay land deal until after it was a done deal. When DeMarzo and his wife were on vacation, a closed-door meeting with businessmen about fixing the budget was held (where were the taxpayers/homeowners)? Why do we need back room meetings deciding on how to cut our city budget? Isn’t that what commissioner meetings are supposed to be for? The state already gave the City of Wildwood a 139-page report a few years ago about where they could save money, which was basically ignored. Included in that study was videotaped meetings and less personnel. A professional study was already done a few years ago advising the North Wildwood and Wildwood Fire departments should be consolidated and one volunteer fire department in each of those municipalities should be closed which would save $1.1 million per year. I hardly believe that Troiano and Davenport would know better than the State of New Jersey or a paid professional study. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the waste in the city. We’re only a 1.3-square mile town and we have three fire departments. Davenport is accusing me of making frivolous complaints, costing the taxpayers many dollars. This accusation is the most troubling to me. I ask him to provide proof of all the statements that he made directed toward me. I believe an elected official making these kinds of statements and publicly attacking a private citizen goes beyond the scope of his duties as a city commissioner. He talks about OPRA requests. The Open Public Records Act (OPRA), was enacted into law to assure the people access to government records, making it more transparent and a deterrent to corruption. He also states, “With regard to Michael DellaVella’s complaint against the City of Wildwood,” … and “In addition, they have filed complaints against more than 25 city employees of the City of Wildwood.” I’d like an answer in this forum from Davenport as to the specific complaints and the 25 city employees he’s referring to. demarzo solutions don't include, spending money that you don't have (Wreck Center, Doo Flop just to name a few) hire friends and family (Breuss' brother his son as a temp at the FD), no bid contracts and box seats at the Eagles games (thanks rem and Ver), does ET enjoy the rent that he gets from the rent paid by rem&vert for the building they rent (oh yea that his dads) Doing side work in town with out permits, purchasing fire equipment from a captain of the FD (hey Chris D. you been in the PO's office three time now) when are they going to keep ya. Promoting more than a half dozen PD brass 30 days before the election. WD RA loves that new side walk that the tax payers paid for. Can I put a basket ball court in front of my house. WD why don't you lend every tax payer $5000 grand we will vote for you two. If I give you Flyers Tickets will you promote me too? Bring shame upon the city with rumors of an affair, cursing at kids, covering up for his son ETIII and Cryin Ryan' actions, (the anger management twins). Give ways to Joey M. who has feed ET and WD for years, (***) Fire trucks and fancy gifts, when does it end. How about the 45% raise he gave PW, oh ET who is going to pay that???? OH YEA WE WILL... I sure demarzo's plan does not include those things. One more thing thingGoogle Video the 09/26/07 minutes 33 minuets into the video, nice way to treat the guy paying your paycheck.
I heard demarzo said you can't spend what you don't have that sounds like a start. I say support the recall and if demarzo fails to make progress WE throw him out too.

For those of you that think Mike DellaVella is a carpet bagger, just thank God you have someone who is willing to stand-up for the tyrants in city govt. Yes, maybe he did start out on the high rise issue. Wasn't it tea that got everyone fired up in Boston a couple hundred years ago. Sometimes, enough is just enough. DellaVella was probably concerned about high rises, but then you start looking at all the questionable billing practices, back bay fiasco, chasing ratables like imaginary rabbits. AND now ET thinks that OTB is maybe the answer to Wildwood's financial woes. Is this guy smoking something? Yes, thank you to Mike DellaVella for turning the spotlights where they need to be turned, on City Hall.

The only people that support the Mayor are those in the construction trade and people that work for the city. You would be surprised to know how many city employees live outside the city. They contribute nothing to the city's tax base. You would also be surprised at the amount of hotel and business owners that suddenly became city residents right before the last election.
I can not believe that city employees (like the boardwalk inspector) went door to door, in uniform to solicit donations for the mayor's re-election. It's disgraceful.

I applaud you Michael Dellavella for opening up the eyes of the citizens and taxpayers of Wildwood with your informative letters to the Editor. You've attended many commissioner meetings with very good suggestions and questions and have basically been maligned or ignored by Troiano and Davenport. Your courage is to be commended. These guys are not only incompetent, but have raped the taxpayers of Wildwood while watching their fellow citizens lose their homes and businesses. This town is in the worst physical and economic shape it has ever been in. Troiano and Davenport wouldn't hate you and attack you with lies if they weren't upset that you are getting the truth out about what's really happening and the people are realizing what you say in your letters is truthful. Keep up the good work. Thank you for all you do. The people of Wildwood need to put their full support behind you and Commissioner DeMarzo and anyone else who puts Davenport and Troiano in their places and gets them out of office so we can take our town back and make it a safe, affordable place to live for all citizens and taxpayers.

I agree there are many problems in Wildwood, I believe Mayor Troiano is just out of his league. He would do fine with his business however he has no clue how to run Municipal Government. He is just trying to do much at the whim of special interest groups. He can not take any type of constructive criticism without retaliation against who ever says anything. Davenport is just worthless; he was one of the worst paid firefighters I ever saw. He would panic on the fires and when the professional firefighters would not listen to him he would try to have disciplinary action but the people running the city were more intelligent then him and would not back him. I guess this is his payback. And now about this Michael Dellavella his letter is signed Wildwood. This is just a disgruntled carpet bagger who purchased a condo and when the hi rise issue came up was upset when one of the hi rise was to be built next to him. This is why he is always attacking everyone associated with the hi rises. He is not a registered voter in Wildwood and has only been in town for a couple of years. He should go back to Philadelphia where he works and lives and keep his personal agenda. He clearly go off half cocked and I for one can prove he just does things without checking or verifying the accuracy of them. He is so concerned about the alleged voter fraud and he does not vote here or probably did not own his condo at the time of the election. Again we have someone who knows nothing about this town putting his two cents in,

What gets me is the fact that those in charge of these (small towns) think they are above reproach. People's livelyhoods are now in danger of falling apart. These commisioners care nothing about the tax payers. We need commisioners who know what they are doing. Commisioners that are for the people not for themselves & their own private agendas. Our childrens children are going to be paying for these back door dealings. How many times do we have to take out bonds to fix our problems?????

As a NW resident taxpayer I take exception to the allegation that the Recreation employees are thieves. Look through the smokescreen that WD's son in law is creating in our city. He is as bad an apple as his father in law is in Wildwood. NW taxpayer money was wasted paying city lawyers to come up with an "opinion" that would be detrimental to the reputations of these employees. He leaked the lawyer's opinion to the press hoping to disgrace and embarrass these employees. He is also using the county prosecutor's office to do his dirty work in an attempt at anonymity in destroying 3 lives. When the prosecutor's office found no criminal wrong doing, he and his sheep Ed, Bob & Ray took it upon themselves to use tax monies to fabricate an opinion as fact. If I am not mistaken, the same outfit of Reminton Vernick is doing the construction on NW City Hall and the Police Department buildings. Will we experience the same rip off in NW that Wildwood residents are paying dearly for? What is the connection if not Davenport & Rosenello. Our city has gone down hill under the present regime. We are overdeveloped, overtaxed and they continue undertaking "city projects" which are costing the taxpayers dearly and only benefiting this council and administrator's wallets. The Surf Avenue fiasco is going to cost us dearly in lawsuits as is the Recreation fiasco. I only hope WD saves some boxes for his son in law and the other jerks we call council. Time is running out in North Wildwood, also.

Son Regressed with Their Care
Letters to the Editor | 1 week 1 day ago | Comments 0
To The Editor: In a county that has a multitude of services for the underprivileged, the physically handicapped, and the mentally challenged, why do I find it lacking in the basic care of such individuals? I can say that my son has regressed in the last 10 years he has been in the county’s system compared with the 20 years of true education he and I both received in Pennsylvania. Where are the leaders of the organization that has allowed the staff to commit almost every unimaginable act with my son when they thought no one was watching them? Where is the conscience of the worker who thought they could say anything they wanted to in front of my son and then deny they made the comments? For a service-oriented county, it has failed miserably to have any degree of compassion or consideration for me as a parent who will now have to retrain and redirect my son back to what he was 10 years ago. May I give a polite warning to parents who feel that “What else is there here for my child?” is not an acceptable response from you as a parent. Be very concerned in the changes that are occurring in your loved one each day when they are spending time with these organizations. Question everything that does not hold true with your child’s behavior and challenge these organizations to serve the individuals with a passion that is heartfelt. The organizations do not deserve raises ore any kind of thank you for a job well done because they are only doing enough to get by and make it look like something else. Directors of these organizations have said to me “I can’t believe she would do that.” My response to that is, “Question the one doing the deed, not the person reporting it to you.” I am concerned for all the individuals in the school system, the recreation programs, and the day programs. I willingly sign my name and ask each individual who comes in contact with my son and me in the days ahead to be considerate of my feelings, and not approach us. We will do well without any help. Hospital Needs Unit for the Mentally Ill
Letters to the Editor | 1 week 1 day ago | Comments 9
To The Editor: Now that Cape May County has the highest suicide rate in New Jersey, it is time that we have a psychiatric unit at our local hospital. There would be no shortage of patients seeking the help of such a unit. At present, someone entering the emergency room with symptoms of mental illness is screened, deciding whether they need hospitalization. If they need to be hospitalized, they may lay in the emergency room for 12 hours or more, while a bed is found for them at another facility. I feel this is unacceptable. I read over the past few years about the introduction of a new MRI unit, a catherization lab, etc. All heralded with great fanfare and publicity. Could it be that a hospital finds such unit openings more revenue generating than a psychiatric unit? Most patients suffering these debilitating disorders of the brain are on a limited income. Many on disability as their illness may prevent them from working. I would hope in this day and age that people realize that mental illness is not something “All in the mind,” but a physical disease of the chemistry and biology of the brain. Most of these illnesses are treatable with medication, and understanding. The stigma of mental illness has gone on long enough. They are not unlike Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and many other brain diseases. And as such, the victims deserve the same compassion and care allotted to any other physical illness. Perhaps it is odd behavior that sometimes manifests itself, that makes people shun these victims. Behaviors that are sometimes not in their control, but can be addressed with the proper care, medications and community support. Perhaps it is fear; statistics show that the mentally ill have a lower incidence of violence than the so-called “normal” population. In many cases, they are the victims of violence and degradation. We are seeing so many of our brave men and women returning from the wars raging in the Middle East. Many of them are coming home with post traumatic stress disorder, depression and the list goes on. Mental health has to come out of the darkness; we have to stop treating these people as if they are invisible. They are suffering in many cases, with a disease that robs them of a normal life from a young age. All they ask is to be treated with respect and dignity and be accepted by a society which at present treats them with a stigma they do not deserve. This is why I feel that Cape Regional Medical Center, as a community hospital, has to treat and make arrangements for all members of the community. Not pick and choose which new innovations will bring in the most revenue. A psychiatric unit is sorely needed and well overdue. No human being should lay in an emergency room hour after hour while they await a bed. When a bed is finally found, it may be quite a distance from their home, making it difficult for family members to visit them. No, it is time for our community hospital to take that leap into the future and give the citizens of Cape May County a psychiatric unit for an ever growing problem in today’s world. Regarding the comment: "No they don't no what causes mental illness but other illness can cause depression so are you saying because I have MS that the reason I have depression is to buy the meds so the drug people get rich."
Not at all. What I was saying they put people on medications that cause depression, physical problems and other mental problems. It's about the drug companies getting rich on the backs of unsuspecting people, and doctors, who are never told, or minimize, the long term side effects of antidepressants, opiates and benzo's. Also, the fact that antidepressants have been proven to be no better than a placebo. Doesn't mean you aren't depressed. Just saying there are other ways to cope with depression and the answer is not in the pills as the drug companies have programmed us, and the doctors, to believe. They are actually causing more harm then good.

This is an excellent letter, unfortunately the writer who says"follow the money"is right on the money.I have seen first hand with loved ones, the shortcomings of the system in place at CRMC.The circumstances get even more complicated when the patient has serious medical and mental issues. Most of the "Social Workers"in these capacities, serve the interest of the employing facility. My heart goes out to anyone, patient or loved one, trying to get help.

Most people who got to the hospital for mental health issues need to be in just for a couple of days to a week. The comment of patients wandering the halls that is why there are lock down units. If I am not mistaken you have to be buzzed in to and out of the pedertric and materny wards you could do the same thing here. To the commentor saying it is the drugs that cause sucides you are wrong If I wasn't on an antidepressant I wouldn't be here yes some meds are wrong for certain people and they could cause sucide that just means that it is the wrong one for them. I know that the closess unit is at ACMC Mailand in Pomona and if you are there vollunterly it is nothing more then a place to sleep They don't have any groups were you can talk about things that are bothering you. what brought you to the point of sucide while they get you on the meds and get you stable What iI am trying to say it isn't run in a good way.

Cape Regional is a hospital, not a long term care facility. I agree that there

IF YOU THE CITIZENS OF WILDWOOD, LET THIS CURRENT MAYOR IN OFFICE, YOU ARE SERIOUSLY HEADED FOR DISASTER, YOU NEED TO MAKE THE RECALL HAPPEN AND VERY SWIFTLY TO MAKE WILDWOOD A AFFORDABLE TOWN TO LIVE, BEFORE YOU ARE RUN OUT LIKE MANY RESIDENTS LEAVING.

Commissioner DeMarzo always acts with the best interests of the City of Wildwood at heart. Your so called trivial matter was another one of a long list of "trivial matters" that have caused the taxes to rise to the level that they are in Wildwood and forcing people to move. The Mayor asks why isn't the dirt in Wildwood as valuable as the dirt in North Wildwood or the Crest. Answer: His corrupt leadership has had a severe negative impact on property values. Get him out of office and install a legimate government and watch the property values go up. Mayor ( I can't say no) Troiano and his Commissioner (Whatever you want boss) Davenport have refused to apply any common sense in running the city. Commissioner DeMarco in an effort to get some control over the proper management of the city has been left with no other option then to open these matters to public scrunity. Check the commissioner's voting records and it's perfectly clear that Mutt and Jeff are the problem. Thank you for your service and keep up the good work Commissioner DeMarzo.

I said this before and I'll say it again: If you think that I'll ever think it is a good idea to allow ET and his cronies the opportunity to destroy the rest of the Wildwoods, you are on serious medication. I was run out of Wildwood by mismanagement and high taxes. Moving to the Crest resulted in lower taxes, better government services and quality of life. Judging from the news, West Wildwood might want to consolidate. It seems that their form of government and inept public servants would be a good fit for Wildwood. Gee, didn't we consolidate services with JCOW? Look what happened win the Mayor got his hands on that. What a mess! The common denominator always seems to come to the Mayor of Wildwood.
