COURT HOUSE –– During the holidays, food banks help many people put meaningful dinners on the table.

Countywide branches of the U.S Postal Service will collect non-perishable food to help fill food banks desperately in need of replenishment after Thanksgiving in preparation for Christmas.

Mail carriers will do the footwork and deliver items to the food pantry but need residents to supply the goods, Saturday, Dec. 6.

Leave any unopened, non-perishable food item near the mailbox for the carrier to pick up. Food items can also be dropped off at participating postal services.

STONE HARBOR -- Thanksgiving Weekend drew to a close with thoughts that turned to Christmas from Friday, Nov. 28 to Saturday, Nov. 29.

There were many activities for families to enjoy along 96th Street and adjacent business districts throughout the days.

But Saturday night was a time for singing Christmas carols and watching the parade that ushered in Santa and Mrs. Claus brought to town on a white horse-drawn carriage.

To the above poster, I don't know what you were expecting from little ol' Stone Harbor, but every single item listed on the chamber of commerce calender was present. We watched the pet parade, danced to the stringband, and took advantage of the free grub on Friday - saw Santa and watched the parade on Saturday. I think they did a great job, town was mobbed, and people were having a good time. Whatever you are looking for, I don't think a small town can provide.

We were there on Friday for the so called Christmas in Stone Harbor, there was nothing much going on as far as Christmas Festivities! It was a big waste of time.

COURT HOUSE -- Local community members participating in Operation Fireside picked up 452 U.S. Coast Guard recruits from Training Center Cape May Thursday Nov. 27 and provided them with a break from the rigors of basic training and, most importantly, Thanksgiving dinner.

Some recruits went to the Disabled American Veterans in Del Haven or Veterans of Foreign Wars halls in various places, but truly fortunate recruits were taken in by local families where they could watch football, phone home and send e-mails.

I would like to thank all of the families for sharing their holiday with our family members. My daughter and two other recruits were invited to the Bechtler's home, where they were treated, "like family" , according to my daughter. The Bechtler's made them all feel comfortable and allowed our family to enjoy the holiday because we knew that Kristin was having a family Thanksgiving. Operation Fireside is wonderful idea. Thank you to The Lutes family for taking these young men in for the day. My son was one of the lucky men that spent the day with the Lutes. Words can not say enough to express the feeling it gave us to know he got to spend Thanksgiving with such a giving and caring family. You are definitely a special family with a special heart! Thanks The Loughner's

Thanks so much to all the families that opened their homes to the recruits. Our son Patrick was one of the young men that spent Thanksgiving with the Lutes Family. A very special "Thank You" to them. I'm sure all the recruits enjoyed their time away from training and it certainly made it a day for us back home to be thankful for. The Horn Family
