bond | 1 year 12 weeks ago | Comments 2
STONE HARBOR —A $3.3 million bond ordinance introduced last month in reaction to a referendum for a bond worth twice the amount was adopted at a regular meeting Sept. 4.
The new bond stands to cover the balance for 2007 capital projects. The grand total of the revised budget is $3,803,800; $503,800 of which is previously funded.
After the referendum June 26 on a $6.6 mil-lion bond, including $2 million for a controversial recreation facility, Mayor Suzanne Walters and Council President Barry Mastrangelo asked committee chairpersons to take another look at their capital budgets.

Commissions and boards to tell everyone what they can and cant do. Welcome to Cape May. No wonder so few families live here.

Obviously you dont know the history of Cape May. It was not "founded" as a national historic town. Go back to PA or wherever and leave the localism to the locals.

If you know the history of Cape May and are truly concerned with the preservation of it's building and not monetary gains for your friends in town or business associates then it's time to speak up at the HPC meetings and watch them carefully. They do not seem too concerned about integrity or truthfulness or educational background or training. Apparently, anyone can be appointed to the HPC Board. The "removal " of Pip Campbell, the most qualified member of the Board, show just how threatened Skip feels. She stood up for CM preservation and she knows her stuff. How many more houses will be demolished, renovated beyond recognition or lost before someone speaks out? Why isn't the HPC being questioned for it's decisions by City Council? CM was founded as a National Historic town and lets face it, it's one thing we get to say makes us unique. Let's not let the HPC lose sight of its mission.

Middle Thorofare Bridge links Wildwoods and Lower Township.
CREST HAVEN — A public hearing will take place Thursday, Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. in the Cape May County Administration Building, 4 Moore Road regarding the Cape May County Bridge Commission’s proposed toll rate increase on the five Ocean Drive Bridges operated by the commission.
Tolls would increase to $1.50 in one direction, up from the present $1. The increased tolls would be used to pay interest and principal on a $12 million bond that was secured in 2005 to fund various repairs.

A 33 % increase to fund the principal and interest from a bond taken in 2005 for various bridge repairs??
Ahh...isn't that how the 50cent bridge toll became the dollar bridge toll ? How many times can you raise the tolls based on money you borrowed years and years ago and already spent?
Their is no accounting, no plan for bridge repairs in CMC. If they need to increase the tolls that much to pay for debt they spent years ago....we are in serious trouble folks.
All this money and still our bridges are structurally failing. I guess we need one to fall into the water before they adequately repair or replace them....especially that Ocean Drive bridge.

It is absolutely astounding to me that these bridge commissioners could even entertain the thought of raising tolls anywhere in Cape May County by 33.3 % ! Have they picked up a paper lately?????? The entire country is in a severe RECESSION!!!!!!!!!! Oh, I forgot....... When you run things like the banks and auto manufacturers do, the easy answer it to simply reach into the pocket of the already beaten down taxpayer like a PICK POCKET! Have they ever considered TIGHTENING THEIR BELTS like the rest of the world has to do ??
I doubt it... It's easier to steal it from the innocent taxpayers.

Middle Moves to Repeal Mining License Transfer
Government | 1 day 2 hours ago | Comments 2
COURT HOUSE — Middle Township Committee Monday took steps to repeal an ordinance responsible, in part, for over $30,000 in legal fees.
In April 2007, the township adopted a measure that allowed a local sand and gravel mining company to tie the retirement of its current license for operations on Goshen Road to a proposed site on Indian Trail Road in Burleigh.
Albrecht and Heun and its subsidiary Future Mining and Recycling, the companies in question, are currently before the township zoning board for the proposed operation’s site plan approval.

Indian Trail has changed the direction of government in Middle forever. It will never be quite as "closed to the public and open to corruption." More people are aware, watching, attending meetings. The law they're proposing is another major ATTEMPT to cover-up, but do you think ti's really working any more? deosn't everyone now realize that there were major problems with what the committee did? They're jsut trying to avoid other people brining other Nate-deals to court and having to withdraw them. Yay for the law case, it brought major changes.

Time for the good ole boys in Middle to cover this up. I guess they found a way to do this out of the public light because of all the attention this has brought to corruption at city hall.

It's time for this paper to stop the "Blogging" after an article!! Anyone can come on here and say what they want : most of the time being hurtful and untrue and this paper allows it. It's time for the Herald to grow up and gain some respect instead of allowing pain and untruths to be spelled out in such a way that no one is held responsible for what they write!! Mr. 2:34 is a prime example. It's not freedom of speech when it's offensive. If it was, the Herald would allow vulgar words and criticisms of Jack Fichter!!

Good for you Mr. Mazurek voting no on these contracts. Nolan and Craig didn't give two shakes what this is going to cost or whether the township can afford it, they are out of here. This administration has made one bad decision after another and that is why we are in financial trouble.
Ramming through these contracts at the last minute of this administration was necessary to put the shaft to the incoming administration. Talk about sour grapes, what poor losers to stick it to the taxpayers. I'm glad they are gone and hopefully two others will go with them shortly. Only idiots approve a contract without knowing the costs, or people who want to stick it to others. The dirty deed is done and it should come as no surprise to anyone when the pink slips start flying.

You are the lowest form of human being. I can only pray that I never have to opportunity to come across in my life time. I am thoroughly disgusted and sickened by your remarks. The strange thing about that remark is it reminds me of the one posted by Janet Pitts, the President of the LT Taxpayers Association regarding the Phila Police Officer killed in the line of duty. When a thread was started with condolences to the family, she stated that Oh he knew he had a chance of being killed in the line of duty when he took the job. So for those of you who think it is ok for some scum bag to kill a Police Officer and that his family should not be upset because these people knew this could happen when they took the job, you sicken me. You should thank God everyday that there are people out there that are willing to risk thier lives to protect you and your family. I know I do.

To the WEd 2:34 Pm Poster .... When you need help Dont call 911 call your Mall Police.
Lower Twp officers DO NOT respond in force to EVERY call there lucky if they have Back UP half the time.
Do you think Officer Dave Douglass"s family has "GOTTEN OVER IT BY NOW".
Officer Dave Douglass was a Highly Trained Police Officer who was shot and killed in the Line of Duty protecting the residents of Lower Township.
And you ....ARE A PIECE OF ***....... However every Lower Township Police Officer would give there life to protect yours.
But you are still a piece of ***.

To 12/3/2008 - 2:34pm: YOU ARE A DISGUSTING EXCUSE FOR A HUMAN BEING! This is the mindset of people who support MIKE BECK, and probably is his opinion about the subject as well. This is what you voted in as mayor. "I guess all the other NJ towns don't have a Douglass that died and the townsfolk have been paying dearly for that ever since. Didn't that happen over 10 years ago? Shouldn't LTPD have gotten over it by now?"

Wayne, how dare you vote NO on a modest contract such as this one! You made sure you were set for the rest of your pathetic days by voting yourself a 5% raise before you retired. You should be ashamed of yourself, but that would require you having a conscience and character---something you and your buddy Mike, lack.

I certainly hope the first poster isn't LTPD personnel because the grammar is so bad. Is a HS education a requirement of being on LTPD or can any relative join without requirements? Considering the booty given out with the contracts, shouldn't LT have the cream of the crop? Instead, we have to have them travel in 3s because none of them know the full gamut of the law. Does Beck know he can only layoff LTPD personnel so that multiples of 3 remain. We wouldn't want to confuse any LTPD by not having a sundry group of officers arrive at the scene of the crime. I was shopping at Hamilton Mall and noticed ONLY ONE local officer was handing out a traffic violation. What, no backup? Don't they know they are taking their lives in their hands by not having a multitude of officers respond to EVERY call? I guess all the other NJ towns don't have a Douglass that died and the townsfolk have been paying dearly for that ever since. Didn't that happen over 10 years ago? Shouldn't LTPD have gotten over it by now? Or at least get better training so that the incident doesn't reoccur?

How naive are you people? Don't you think that the contacts named in the article were not going to get settled? C'mon now, it was inevitable that it was going to happen anyway. The only reasons you Bch and moan is because it was settled by Nolan, Craig, Douglass and Conrad. It would have happened anyway in arbitration. Now all these crybabies can pass blame and have an excuse to make layoffs the new admin wanted anyway,

It appears that the 10:20am post is that of LTPD with the "citizen" comment. We local yokels usually refer to ourselves as residents of LT. Besides, how can you vote for something when the specifics have not been provided to you. I guess it's why this economy is so bad if no one is looking at the details, such as can I afford this house, car, furniture, etc. The outcome of not looking at whether you can afford these contracts is to lay off personnel after the fact to keep within the cap. I would think dealing with the realities sooner rather than later would be preferable but then again I'm just a local yokel. I only hope the new administration keeps its promise to provide information to the residents of LT and not rely on the "closed sessions" practiced by the current one.

Looks like the outgoing Republicans decided to give the store away as their last official shaft to the taxpayers with these 4 contract approvals.. Loved the lifetime benefit give a way, that's going to cost a bundle.
Unfortunately, this changes everything for the incoming Mayor/Deputy Mayor. Given this financial blow to the township, no one expects them to keep any of their past promises not to lay people off, or outsource whole departments, if need be.
Do whatever you have to do Mayor Beck, Deputy Mayor Lare and councilmember Mazurek. We know you stand for the people and we support you.
I'm ashamed of Conrad and Douglass for continuing the petty politics everyone is disgusted with in this township.

It's about time Lower Police recieved there contract, the contract is good for both sides, it's fair for the officers and the township. We all need to realize these are officers who put their lives on the line, they are not only paid for what they do, but most importantly what they may be called to do! I for one like sleeping at night and being safe, I can say I don't want to chase/fight a drug dealer or a person who is crasy and may want to do harm to another. We can all see the efforts of the police, the pro-active approach they take against criminals and as a citizen I am glad they now have a contract.
I must say to Councilman Mazurek it sounds like you may have a different thought regarding the police, I hear your explaination but I don't buy it! Stop being a "yesman" to our new administration, we appointed you to council and we can only hope you start making better decisions.

This is getting ridiculous and out of hand. As someone who doesn't have much of a choice but to take the parkway to work everyday, having to cross the Egg Harbor Bay, I spend $2 per day, or $40 per month, just to drive 13 miles. I may have to consider taking the long route through Ocean City in order to get to Cape May County!

I guess you are looking to appoint a director of public safety due to the fact the prosecutors office will be investigating you on the very detailed and explicit letter that has been received by almost every government entity in Cape May County, you will be too busy to oversee the department of public safety as you will be under strict scrutiny ... this time the truth WILL NOT set you free.

That is quite an expensive bond maybe some of the money should have been donated to a beneficial association
