East Lynne Theater Company presents scholarship

Erin Callahan, East Lynne Theater Company’s 2008 Scholarship recipient.

At East Lynne Theater Company's only Cape May fundraising event in 2008, Erin Callahan was named the second recipient of the Historic Jackson Street Neighborhood Association Scholarship Fund in the Name of Bob and Toni Green.

This fund was started in the fall of 2006 with a generous $5,000 donation from HJSNA, in honor of the Greens, who first owned The Puffin on Jackson Street.

Musical programs celebrate Christmas in Ocean City

The Ocean City Pops Orchestra highlights an impressive series of musical programs during the holidays. Joy To The World is set for 7:30 p.m., Dec.12 at the Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center, 6th and Atlantic Ave.

Bill Scheible will conduct a program that includes carols, works by Mozart, scenes from the Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, an appearance by the Canadian Brass, the Cape Shore Chorale directed by Scott Breiner and the Angelus Chorus, directed by Richard Stanislaw.

Stanislaw, CEO of the Ocean City Tabernacle, will also be the host for the evening.

“A marching band performance is like a ballet,” said Middle Township High School Band Director, Vincent DuBeau. Both require creative choreography and costuming, and rigorous physical training. But there are some differences.

For example, ballet dancers are rarely required to perform on a rugged football field or to march en pointe along a parade route in bone-chilling temperatures.

And of course, DuBeau noted. “You are performing the music and the motion at the same time.”

Middle presents Christmas at the PAC

The Middle Township Council for the Arts will present an old fashioned Christmas variety show at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center (PAC), Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.

Price of admission is a canned-goods donation to the food pantry, or a new, unwrapped toy. Either way, it’s a heck of a holiday deal.

Billed as “Christmas at the PAC: A Holiday Extravaganza,” the show will include a live Nativity scene, Santa, and a lot of local performers.

Festive season at Middle’s PAC

Middle Township Performing Arts Center plans a festive holiday season:

The Middle Township Council for the Arts will present an old fashioned Christmas variety show at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.

On Monday, Dec. 8 enjoy a professional off-Broadway production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at 7:30 p.m.

This play has enchanted audience the world over with its simple message of selfless giving.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, and $10 for students.

Local artist’s book unveiled

"The View From My Easel" Paintings of South Jersey, by noted regional artist and teacher, Stan Sperlak of Goshen, is the artist’s first book featuring his pastel paintings of South Jersey from the past decade.

An 8 by 10 hardcover book of 80 pages and 120-plus images, this signed, limited edition will sell for $45.

There is an introduction, and comments on several pages about Sperlak’s inspirations.

The book covers early works, the ocean, the fields and marshes, figures and boats, and the night.

The first section is an assortment of the artist’s favorites.

Noting Prohibition’s Repeal on Dec. 5

December 5 marks the 75th Anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition, ending nearly 14 long years of a dry America…well, sort of.

Lots of places, including some Cape May County towns and harbors, remained wet as the Atlantic despite this “Noble Experiment.

The 18th Amendment passed in Dec. 18, 1919, prohibiting the manufacture, sale, or transportation of alcohol beginning in January 1920.
